Case Studies

Case Study Muller Group - Removal and Installation of Floodlights

This case study examines the successful removal and installation of new floodlights for Muller Group. The goal was to remove and reinstate new floodlights, the previous floodlights had been damaged by lorries hitting them, Muller Group required a replacement of new heavy duty floodlights.
Challenges

Prior to the new strategy, Muller Group faced several challenges:

  • Operating a 24 hour site proved challenging with poor visibility.
  • Lorries arrive onsite to off load and reload, this was particularly difficult with limited visibility.
  • Increased site safety risks.
  • Operational issues as only a limited number of shunters could be operational.

The installation focused on regular communication with the onsite manager and Intermech to ensure that whilst the installation took place the site could still be operational.

  • Planning: Several meetings were held to plan the installation. Risk assessments, permit to break ground and method statements were completed. Great consideration was given to the timing of plant deliveries, storage of materials and timescales to ensure the electricians had access when required.
  • Removal: We lifted out the old floodlights using a 6T excavator and lifting strops. Once the floodlights had been removed the electricians came to check the cables were suitable for the new floodlights.
  • Disposal: The old floodlights were cut into smaller more manageable sections, using a disc cutter and disposed of off site.
  • Breakout: The existing concrete was broken out using a breaker attachment and the 6T excavator, all debris was removed from site and disposed of.
  • Reinstatement: A new concrete base approximately 600mm deep 600mm wide was installed for each new floodlight. Shuttering was built onsite and fitted then the concrete was poured and allowed to cure. Threads for the new floodlights were set into the concrete. The new heavy duty floodlights were lifted into place using the excavator and the lifting strops. Once in place the floodlights were bolted in place using the threads previously installed. After our installation the cables were connected by the electricians with no issues.

The new floodlights were removed and installed within three weeks, working within the agreed timescales. The site is now fully operational.

With the site operating 24/7 along with working externally and with large goods vehicle movements, careful planning and traffic management was required. Adam (GEL Landscaping and Groundworks) and his team were very professional, they gave updates daily on progress and adhered to the H&S rules on site at all times.

We would recommend and will be using the Gel team again!
